Introduction: College of the Atlantic's curriculum in human ecology encourages students to seek out connections implicit in ecology and to apply these to humans. Most environmental problems stem from different kinds of human behaviors and interactions. Unlike colleges which offer liberal arts degrees only in specific majors, COA emphasizes an interdisciplinary approach to the arts and sciences. Whether the class is a lab, studio, or seminar, two factors make the COA approach distinctive: the faculty and students' commitment to individualized learning and the freedom to create one's own concentration of study. Though several formalized concentrations of study exist in different areas, students are free to develop personal concentrations of study which allow focus on a singular interest or a combination of interests. The College awards one undergraduate degree, the BA in human ecology which indicates that students understand the relationships between the philosophical and fundamental principles of science, humanities, and the arts.

Introduction: Unity College recognizes that we are custodians of a fragile planet and must assume a leadership role in the stewardship of the earth. Unity College is a small, independent college in a rural setting that exists to educate students within a strong liberal arts context for professional preparation in the fields of environmental science, natural resource management, wilderness-based outdoor recreation and related careers. Unity College’s commitment to a student’s success is manifested in a variety of ways--including a close, personal relationship between faculty and students, small classes, close advising, and easy access to instructors. We provide academic support and enrichment through our comprehensive Learning Resource Center. The Career Resource Center assists students in internship and employment planning and placement. If you are looking for an opportunity to study environmental science, natural resource management, or outdoor recreation and have the opportunity to learn and grow in a small college atmosphere in a distinctly rural setting -- Unity College in Maine may be the right place for you!
