Introduction: The Yale School of Forestry & Environmental Studies offers a Ph.D. and master’s degrees of environmental management (M.E.M.), environmental science (M.E.Sc.), forestry (M.F.), and forest science (M.F.S.). Professionals with at least seven years of environmental work experience can enroll in one-year M.E.M. or M.F. programs. One student in 10 pursues a joint degree in development economics, international relations, law, management, public health, or religious studies. Requirements vary by degree, but all degrees combine foundation courses with electives. Entering students attend a three-week series of workshops in August that combine skills training with community building. Two-year students work at an internship or on a research project during the summer after the first year and complete a final project during the second year. Coursework and research are concentrated into nine broad areas that reflect areas of academic strength at F&ES. They include ecology, ecosystems, and biodiversity; environment, health, and policy; forestry, forest science, and management; global science change and policy; industrial environmental management; policy, economics, and law; social ecology of conservation and development; urban ecology and environmental design; and water science, policy, and management.
