As with any education, it is important that schools offering environmental education be properly accredited. Engineers must have more than a degree; they must be certified and similar to architects, most state registration boards require an engineers’ degree to be from an accredited institution. Students attending accredited institutions are also eligible to attend other accredited schools to pursue master’s degrees and PhD’s. Receiving a degree from an accredited institution also makes the education valuable to the engineering industry.
Two major bodies that accredit environmental programs and institutions are The Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) and National Environmental Health Science & Protection Accreditation Council (EHAC). The ABET accredits engineering-related environmental studies; The EHAC grants accredits programs of an environmental health nature. Both bodies’ accreditation status ensures that students are receiving an education of quality and value.
