An education at the College of the Atlantic is individualized and self-directed, where questioning ideas and seeking out relationships are encouraged. Faculty work along with students as they develop individualized programs of study which enable them to address ecological problems from multiple perspectives.
Along with planning their own course of study, students are also encouraged to seek out practical experiences that will enhance their education. At COA, the committed, responsible student has many options to write and edit press releases, grants, a weekly newsletter, an annual literary magazine, to tutor their peers in writing, math, and word processing, to coordinate a Distinguished Visitors Series, to organize and present exhibits at the New England Environmental Conference, to conduct the COA chorus, to be a lab assistant in chemistry or biology, to monitor whale migrations, and to be a resident advisor.
The complexity of the problems the world faces can only be resolved by bridging disciplines. COA's approach to learning enables students to design an interdisciplinary course of study in the liberal arts and sciences. This personalized approach to education combined with practical experience in problem solving allows students to develop important skills necessary to make meaningful contributions to society.
In addition to the 55 or so courses offered each term, tutorials, independent studies, and group studies may be designed to complement the individualized nature of each student 's curriculum. A term-length internship, through which students apply knowledge, develop skills, and clarify career goals, must be completed during a student's third year. The senior project, a term-length, major piece of independent work allows graduating seniors to demonstrate in-depth knowledge in their concentration of study by examining an issue from more than one perspective.
