The understanding of our natural environment has never been more important than at the present. The pressures of a growing population, increased development, altered communities and changing climate present serious problems to ecosystems locally, nationally and worldwide. Lees-McRae College offers a variety of environmental programs designed to help students become leaders who have the tools to address these problems through its Division of Science and Mathematics.
Through its Biological Sciences degree track (BA or BS), students may pursue Naturalist or Wildlife Rehabilitation Concentrations, leading to careers in wildlife biology, resource management, forest ecology, environmental assessment, environmental education, conservation biology, and in providing health care to wildlife or domesticated animals. The Naturalist program offers a variety of courses that are rarely offered in an undergraduate setting and offers students the chance to gain valuable field experience in the eastern and western United States and in other countries and continents like Africa, Australia, Belize and Puerto Rico. The Wildlife Rehabilitation/Pre-Veterinary Science program offers students extensive, hands-on experience in wildlife rehabilitation and care combined with strong academic coursework in the subject. Through Cooperative Programs with Duke University, some students may also pursue Forestry, Environmental Science, Environmental Management or Marine Sciences.
Lees-McRae College is a four-year, coeducational liberal arts college affiliated with the Presbyterian (U.S.A.) Church, founded in 1900 and became a baccalaureate institution in 1990. LMC is located on a 400-acre campus in Banner Elk, North Carolina, about 55 miles northeast of Asheville, providing an intimate setting for about 600 students from more than 20 states and countries. There is a sense of community here for each other, as well as for the mountain region in which we live. And, there is a genuine desire among our faculty and staff to fuel success in each of our students.
