Northland College has been a leader in studying the environment for over thirty years. Located about one mile from Lake Superior is scenic Ashland, Wisconsin, and surrounded by over one million acres of the Chequamegon National Forest, the area offers a perfect setting for studying the natural world. Northland College is a four-year environmental liberal arts college dedicated to enabling students to effectively meet the environmental challenges they will face. Small classes, hands-on learning, close interaction with faculty (the student-to-faculty ratio is 14:1), and plenty of opportunities to get to know nature provide students with an ideal learning experience.
Northland offers many academic majors, from the traditional sciences and arts to interdisciplinary programs. In fact, Northland has 26 majors and 27 minors to choose from, giving our students flexibility in shaping your environmental education. From Natural Resources and the Fine Arts to Psychology and Environmental Studies, at Northland, we take the inter-relatedness of the liberal arts and our environment very seriously.
Students have the additional bonus of working with the Sigurd Olson Environmental Institute, a resource and research center on campus which promotes environmental protection and restoration. The Institute, named for one of the foremost conservationists of the 20th Century, addresses environmental concerns by working with organizations, agencies and academics outside the college to develop environmentally-sustainable communities, conduct outreach education, organize citizen participation, and provide technical expertise.
