Alaska is simply unmatched in terms of beauty and natural resources in the United States. Much of the state remains untouched (and uninhabitable), making it the largest wilderness region in the country. With its myriad environmental issues, Alaska is an ideal place to study the integration of stakeholders' needs in natural resource projects, from timber harvesting to oil and gas exploration to the protection of wildlife and the interests of Native Americans.

Several colleges and universities offer environmental programs here; the chief difference between programs here and programs in the Lower 48 is that classes are often carried out in the living, breathing classroom of the natural world. Students experience environmental challenges and their consequences on a daily basis. For a truly unique experience without having to study abroad, environmental students should consider Alaska!

Introduction: The Far North bioregion in Alaska offers countless learning opportunities in a landscape that is beautiful, vast, and wild. It is perhaps one of the most unique and amazing classrooms we have ever had the opportunity to utilize. Looking through a variety of academic and social lenses during our months in Alaska, we will collaboratively examine a wide array of academic topics. These will include: the politics and frontier culture of the Far North, the unique situation of the native corporations in the state of Alaska, the diverse ecosystems of the bioregion, and the history of human influence in the area, including mining, commercial fishing, oil development, and ecotourism.
