Arizona, located in the American Southwest and bordering Mexico, is arguably in one of the most beautiful and unique environments in the world. Much of the state is covered in desert, but northern Arizona's mountainous region gets snow in the winter.

Many environmental initiatives in the state focus on preservation of the desert environment and its wild inhabitants. The scarcity and misuse of water is one of the most pressing issues in the area, as developers, farmers and ranchers, communities, and plants and animals all fight for this limited resource. Luckily forward-thinking students, businesses and groups in the state are helping communities come together to solve these multi-faceted issues and protect Arizona's environment as well as its citizens' ways of life. Students choosing to pursue an environmental degree here will not be disappointed - with so many opportunities for positive action, every day is a learning experience!

Introduction: We will explore the evolution of land and culture in the beautiful Desert Southwest of the United States. Students learn about the geopolitical border of Mexico and the United States, learning about immigration issues and environmental destruction from different perspectives. The Southwest is a blending of cultures, including Natives (the Papago, Navajo and Hopi) and recent immigrants from Western European expansion (the Spanish, ranchers and cowboys, the Mormons, and others). We will spend a significant portion of our time in various desert environments of this magnificent and largely unsettled world. The desert is a unique study in life adapted to harsh living conditions, and the fantastic geological formations there will capture the imagination of nature lovers. Students will investigate ranching and water issues; where has all the water in the desert gone? Can we get it back? Southwest Desert semesters give students a deep insight into the character of the desert and the people and other creatures that inhabit it.
