Much of Arkansas' beautiful rolling mountain ranges remain heavily forested, making this state a logical choice for environmental students. Important issues include water quality (the Mississippi River makes up the state's eastern border), environmental justice (much of Arkansas' rural population is underserved by agencies and NPO's), and protection of endangered and threatened species. Arkansas is also a great place to learn about community organization and action - how the protection of natural resources can be made to benefit poorer communities rather than harm them economically.
Environmental programs such as natural resource management; wildlife biology; agriculture; and geology are offered at Arkansas' universities, colleges, and community colleges. Jobs for graduates include parks and recreation services and management, environmental advocacy and law, and environmental education.

Introduction: The distance-learning program in Coastal Zone Management at Nova Southeastern University’s Oceanographic Center provides a timely, credible forum for learning about key national and international issues and case studies related to the ecology and management of the coastal and marine environment, including ongoing research at the Oceanographic Center. The flexible distance format makes it ideal for adult learners, including working professionals and college graduates in a variety of related fields. Courses may be taken individually for general interest, undergraduate or graduate credit. We offer a full online MS in Coastal Zone Management and a 4-course Graduate Certificate in Coastal Studies. Our distance MS in Education with Specialization in Environmental Education is available through the National Graduate Teacher Education online program. The “Study Abroad” program provides a jointly-taught MS in Marine Biology with a field station of the University of London.
