Vacationers have known for years that Colorado has unique and beautiful scenery. Grand Mesa, the world's largest flat-top plateau, is found in the state. Much of the land is protected in parks, making this an ideal place for environmental studies.
Colorado has a lot to offer environmental students, and unfortunately it's not just desert flowers and snow-capped peaks. Colorado suffers from a number of environmental challenges, especially water resource management. Air pollution, especially in the Denver area, is also an issue of concern. Luckily, most schools offer environmental degrees and have active community groups to join - grassroots initiatives can (and do!) make a difference. Environmental jobs can be found with conservation groups, concerned business (large and small), and the many government agencies found throughout the state. Colorado has a special need for forest rangers and fire prevention specialists.

Introduction: We will explore the evolution of land and culture in the beautiful Desert Southwest of the United States. Students learn about the geopolitical border of Mexico and the United States, learning about immigration issues and environmental destruction from different perspectives. The Southwest is a blending of cultures, including Natives (the Papago, Navajo and Hopi) and recent immigrants from Western European expansion (the Spanish, ranchers and cowboys, the Mormons, and others). We will spend a significant portion of our time in various desert environments of this magnificent and largely unsettled world. The desert is a unique study in life adapted to harsh living conditions, and the fantastic geological formations there will capture the imagination of nature lovers. Students will investigate ranching and water issues; where has all the water in the desert gone? Can we get it back? Southwest Desert semesters give students a deep insight into the character of the desert and the people and other creatures that inhabit it.

Introduction: Naropa University is a private, non-profit, non-sectarian liberal arts institution dedicated to advancing contemplative education. Contemplative education is an approach to learning that integrates the best of Eastern and Western educational traditions, helping students know themselves more deeply and engage constructively with others. The university comprises a four-year undergraduate college and graduate programs in the arts, education, environmental leadership, psychology and religious studies, as well as study abroad programs. The university offers a BA degree and minors in environmental studies and an MA degree in environmental leadership. Core courses in the BA program emphasize sustainability, systems science, field sciences and community learning, along with contemplative and intercultural aspects of environmental work. The MA program integrates the study of ecosystems and human systems with a path of personal and societal transformation. The MA curriculum explores living systems theory, deep ecology, ecopsychology, group dynamics/leadership, diverse leadership models and contemplative education.
