Florida, one of the largest and most populous states in the nation, is also host to myriad environmental issues - wetlands rebuilding, endangered species conservation (and what to once those species become pests - we're talking to you, alligators), water resources management, agriculture, and much more.
Florida has several fine institutions offering degrees in all disciplines, though most notably in marine sciences, natural resource management, forestry, and conservation biology. Students can pursue internships and jobs at the federal (NOAA and FEMA are prominent there), state, local/grassroots, and non-profit levels - and of course in the business arena as well.

Introduction: The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Florida International University provides students a bachelor of science degree in environmental engineering, a master of science degree in environmental engineering, and a master of science degree in environmental and urban systems. The department also offers a PhD in Civil Engineering with majors in Environmental Engineering and in Water Resources Engineering. In addition to a rigorous core curriculum in science and the liberal arts, environmental programs are complemented by a variety of lab courses, including water supply engineering, waste water, and water and soil quality. Students also benefit from the plethora of research performed at FIU, especially in air pollution and coastal monitoring. The school’s coastal location in Miami provides students outstanding access to coastal areas, a variety of water sources, and a wealth of marine life. FIU participates in a number of federal financial aid programs and also offers several scholarships to environmental engineering students. An extensive array of career services includes career planning, internship placement, career fairs, resume writing, and interview coaching.

Introduction: The distance-learning program in Coastal Zone Management at Nova Southeastern University’s Oceanographic Center provides a timely, credible forum for learning about key national and international issues and case studies related to the ecology and management of the coastal and marine environment, including ongoing research at the Oceanographic Center. The flexible distance format makes it ideal for adult learners, including working professionals and college graduates in a variety of related fields. Courses may be taken individually for general interest, undergraduate or graduate credit. We offer a full online MS in Coastal Zone Management and a 4-course Graduate Certificate in Coastal Studies. Our distance MS in Education with Specialization in Environmental Education is available through the National Graduate Teacher Education online program. The “Study Abroad” program provides a jointly-taught MS in Marine Biology with a field station of the University of London.
