Hawaii is a beautiful and instructive place to study the environment. It has one of the best air quality indexes in the country, thanks to a combination of natural environmental factors and a lack of industrial pollutants. The water is clean and clear, and the environment is well-protected. Hawaii is also one of the most biodiverse places on the planet - and its residents intend to keep it that way.
Research centers on the islands are frequently used by leading conservation biologists, oceanographers, fisheries managers, and geologists. This creates great internship and job prospects for Hawaii's students. Students will also enjoy the rich local culture and exposure to many different ways of the thinking about the environment.

Introduction: The beautiful island chain of Hawai'i is not all tropical beaches and exotic luaus. The semester in Hawai'i, Microcosm of Earth: Interpreting Hawai'i's Ecological and Cultural Stories, looks at the ancient history of the islands in comparison to the recent turmoil of European colonization and subsequent modernization. Ecologically, Hawai'i is fascinating because it contains almost every kind of ecosystem on Earth; this is why it is called a microcosm of the Earth. By studying the scientific, cultural and political issues here, we can apply them to other areas around the world. Topics that may be covered include: ancient and contemporary Native culture; impacts of European colonization; ecological uniqueness; geology & volcanism; the good and bad of a tourism economy; marine science; and social justice and political reform. Of course, there will also be time for fun at the beach!

Introduction: The Environmental Studies program (1) teaches students the many interconnected components of environmental issues, (2) clarifies the ethics that guide decision-making processes pertaining to environmental issues, (3) enables students to experience environmental activities, research, policy and professions first-hand, and (4) prepares students for environmental careers and graduate or professional schools. Students gain knowledge in a particular field through a traditional major of their choosing while learning the broad-based knowledge required to comprehend and problem-solve environmental challenges. Depending upon their major, students prepare for careers in environmental: biology, business, chemistry, communications, consulting, ethics, health, law, management, policy, toxicology, writing, etc. The on-line program offers courses that are tailored to students’ specific needs and interests or the needs and interests of the private business or government organization they work for. This custom-fit approach is possible because on-line courses allow students to choose topics that are of particular concern to them in each course they take.

Introduction: The distance-learning program in Coastal Zone Management at Nova Southeastern University’s Oceanographic Center provides a timely, credible forum for learning about key national and international issues and case studies related to the ecology and management of the coastal and marine environment, including ongoing research at the Oceanographic Center. The flexible distance format makes it ideal for adult learners, including working professionals and college graduates in a variety of related fields. Courses may be taken individually for general interest, undergraduate or graduate credit. We offer a full online MS in Coastal Zone Management and a 4-course Graduate Certificate in Coastal Studies. Our distance MS in Education with Specialization in Environmental Education is available through the National Graduate Teacher Education online program. The “Study Abroad” program provides a jointly-taught MS in Marine Biology with a field station of the University of London.
