There are many reasons why an environmental student would want to come to Indiana. The state has a mild climate with four distinct seasons, and it is mostly covered in prairie land. Over 1.1 million acres of land have been allocated for outdoor recreation use in Indiana. The Department of Natural Resources is a blanket agency responsible for overseeing parks, nature preserves, fish and wildlife, as well as museums and memorials. Environmental issues in the state include controlling invasive species (especially in Lake Michigan and its tributaries) and soil and water conservation.

The state has several schools with good environmental and science degree programs, including Purdue University (with its respected research facilities and teams), Saint-Mary-of-the-Woods College, Ball State University, and Indiana University campuses. Life, Physical and Social Science occupations estimate salaries were $53,870 per year on average.

Areas of Study Sampling*:  Environmental Advocacy / Leadership,  Global / International Studies,  Study Abroad,  Sustainable Development

Introduction: FutureGenerations offers a two-year Master of Arts Degree in Applied Community Change and Conservation, and our goal is to create leaders in the field of equitable and sustainable community-based change. In the 1990s, FutureGenerations led two international task forces (one with UNICEF and the other with The Rockefeller Foundation) to research education and community-development policies. Today, we continue to conduct field research around the world to evaluate and modify our approach. The intensive program turns academic theory into practice through experiential learning and on-the-job application. For site-based instruction, students go to India, the U.S., Peru, and Tibet/China to see community change in different types of communities. The distance-learning segment is the “academic” leg of community-based learning. Students interact with faculty and with one another in an engaging and challenging curriculum. Lastly, students engage in four on-the-job practicum sessions, applying and evaluating community-based-change programs with the guidance and support of faculty.

Introduction: Living Routes develops accredited, college-level programs based in ecovillages around the world, which help students gain the knowledge, skills and inspiration to build sustainable lifestyles for themselves, their communities and the Planet. We are living in the most challenging, yet also the most promising era of human history. Given trends in climate disruption, overpopulation, habitat loss, and social injustice, our dominant global culture seems very much like the Titanic -- a gigantic, human-made enterprise headed for certain disaster unless its course is significantly altered. We now need to create new models of education that support this emerging culture. This is the vision behind Living Routes - to develop ecovillage-based educational programs that empower participants to help build a sustainable future.

They are encouraged to look beyond short-term fixes to holistic, long-term goals that positively change attitudes and outcomes. This is a distance-learning program which requires minimum time on campus (5 days at the start of each semester), allowing for great schedule flexibility. The program has two special partnerships; one with a school in India, from which students can earn credit for an online class; and one with Genesis Farm in New Jersey, where students can complete a 12-week residency and earn up to 10 credits.
