Kentucky is known as the Bluegrass State, after the striking blue-green grass that grows especially well here. The Daniel Boone National Forest, located in the mountainous Eastern Coal Fields region, provides important economic, social (recreational) and environmental benefits to Kentuckians, with millions of visitors passing through each year. As one moves west towards the Mississippi, the land becomes low and flat, supporting agriculture and manufacturing plants.

Kentucky's two large coal fields produce billions of dollars in revenue but also cause environmental damage to streams, the air, and the health of people in the community. Kentucky ranks third nationally for timber production. Schools, communities, mining and forestry companies, and the government work together to solve Kentucky's environmental problems.

Introduction: The distance-learning program in Coastal Zone Management at Nova Southeastern University’s Oceanographic Center provides a timely, credible forum for learning about key national and international issues and case studies related to the ecology and management of the coastal and marine environment, including ongoing research at the Oceanographic Center. The flexible distance format makes it ideal for adult learners, including working professionals and college graduates in a variety of related fields. Courses may be taken individually for general interest, undergraduate or graduate credit. We offer a full online MS in Coastal Zone Management and a 4-course Graduate Certificate in Coastal Studies. Our distance MS in Education with Specialization in Environmental Education is available through the National Graduate Teacher Education online program. The “Study Abroad” program provides a jointly-taught MS in Marine Biology with a field station of the University of London.
