Louisiana is half-covered in forest, mostly to the north. The state slopes down in a series of bayous, lakes, rivers, and lagoons to the Gulf Coast; four of the ten busiest U.S. ports are on the Louisiana coast. The landscape has been significantly altered to help control flooding, to straighten waterways to improve transportation, and by poor agricultural and industrial practices (their neighbors to the north compound the problem). Environmental challenges in the state include water quality, wetlands restoration and flood control, and monitoring oil and gas extraction and fishing practices.
Louisiana has several great natural resources management and parks management schools. Wildlife conservation, agricultural sciences, and fisheries management are other popular majors - and jobs.

Introduction: The distance-learning program in Coastal Zone Management at Nova Southeastern University’s Oceanographic Center provides a timely, credible forum for learning about key national and international issues and case studies related to the ecology and management of the coastal and marine environment, including ongoing research at the Oceanographic Center. The flexible distance format makes it ideal for adult learners, including working professionals and college graduates in a variety of related fields. Courses may be taken individually for general interest, undergraduate or graduate credit. We offer a full online MS in Coastal Zone Management and a 4-course Graduate Certificate in Coastal Studies. Our distance MS in Education with Specialization in Environmental Education is available through the National Graduate Teacher Education online program. The “Study Abroad” program provides a jointly-taught MS in Marine Biology with a field station of the University of London.

Introduction: Tulane has been a leader in environmental legal education since 1979; it is one of only seven national schools offering the environmental law concentration at the JD level, and one of four schools offering the LLM in energy and environmental law. The environmental law curriculum at Tulane exposes students to the theory, practice, and advocacy of environmental issues. The curriculum is broad, ranging from basic courses on Pollution Control and Natural Resources to advanced specialized courses such as Marine Pollution and Wildlife & Biodiversity. The school offers 3rd-year students live client practice representing community and public interests at its Environmental Law Clinic. JD students may pursue a Certificate of Specialization in Environmental Law. The school has a strong international environmental law emphasis. Students are active in the Environmental Law Society and in publishing the highly-regarded Tulane Environmental Law Journal. Tulane's Institute for Environmental Law & Policy focuses on policy research and the provision of technical support in environmental reform and international development. The School encourages students to experience field work.
