Wild and rugged, Maine is the largest New England state but has a population of only about 2.5 million. It has thousands of lakes, rivers and streams and 3,500 miles of jagged coastline. Much of the state is mountainous forest, with low coastal valleys and marshes marching towards the sandy shores of the Atlantic coast.
Universities and colleges (especially small liberal arts colleges) offer great environmental programs, many of which emphasize experiences outdoors. Hot programs (and jobs) include conservation biology, environmental education, recreation and parks management, and more. Job openings are expected to increase through 2012. Some jobs predict dramatic increases, such as foresters (11.2% increase), environmental scientists (19.1%), hydrologists (29.3%), and urban and regional planners (19.8%).
