Maryland is really a great place to study and work in environmental fields. The Chesapeake Bay area alone holds many exciting jobs; community groups, research scientists, government agencies, and concerned businesses work very hard to try to clean up the Bay, protect wildlife and wild plants, educate people on the importance of wetlands, and lobby Congress for wetlands-restoration funding. Theirs is a model of community-based activism and cooperation. Other cool fields and jobs include forestry, environmental education, biology, and (being so close to D.C.) environmental policy and advocacy.
Several colleges and universities put great emphasis on their environmental programs and in attracting dedicated students and faculty. For students who decide to stay in Maryland, there is good money to be made. In 2004, soil and plant scientists made an average salary of $54,620. Zoologists and wildlife biologists made $64,310. Environmental scientists made an average of $54,020. Geoscientists earned $75,570.

Introduction: JHU's Environmental Sciences and Policy Master's degree program offers a flexible curriculum that allows students to tailor their academic experience to suit their personal needs and interests.
Programs of study may be structured to accommodate students with little scientific background, although many students are already employed in the environmental field but wish to enhance their training or move in new directions. The program strives to help students develop an understanding of the processes that shape our planet's surface, control the chemistry of our air and water, and produce the resources on which we depend.
At the same time, in order to implement scientific solutions to environmental problems, we must establish and execute policies that are politically, socially, and uconomically feasible. Core coursework includes geology, hydrology, oceanography, meteorology, ecology, and policy making. Electives range across a spectrum from courses strongly oriented toward policy, to ones focused more heavily on science.

Introduction: The distance-learning program in Coastal Zone Management at Nova Southeastern University’s Oceanographic Center provides a timely, credible forum for learning about key national and international issues and case studies related to the ecology and management of the coastal and marine environment, including ongoing research at the Oceanographic Center. The flexible distance format makes it ideal for adult learners, including working professionals and college graduates in a variety of related fields. Courses may be taken individually for general interest, undergraduate or graduate credit. We offer a full online MS in Coastal Zone Management and a 4-course Graduate Certificate in Coastal Studies. Our distance MS in Education with Specialization in Environmental Education is available through the National Graduate Teacher Education online program. The “Study Abroad” program provides a jointly-taught MS in Marine Biology with a field station of the University of London.
