Massachusetts packs a lot into a small state; beaches, swanky island paradises (Nantucket, Martha's Vineyard), large cities (especially Boston, with its sprawling suburbs), and rural areas to the west. The state has some of the best schools in the nation, including Boston College, Harvard, MIT, Tufts, Boston University, and the University of Massachusetts. Several small liberal arts colleges offer environmental degrees as well.
The proximity of jobs, environmental hot spots, big cities, and weekend getaways (Vermont, Maine, the beach, etc.) make Massachusetts a natural choice for environmental students - and for a career. Environmental scientists and specialists received an average salary of $64,320 in 2004. Job openings are expected to increase 12% for these scientists over the current decade; outlooks for similar occupations are also good.

Introduction: Audubon Expedition Institute (AEI) is a fully accredited, traveling undergraduate, graduate, and dual enrollment program. For thirty years we have been transforming students into inspired and compassionate environmental leaders and activists. Students are asked to challenge their intellect and assumptions through real life experiences. While our students learn about subjects such as biodiversity and geology, they also learn first hand about issues such as environmental justice, sustainable economics and conflict resolution. The Masters in Environmental Education degree gives students the knowledge and experience needed to be leading educators in the environmental field. The Masters in Ecological Teaching and Learning degree is intended for working professional educators who wish to enhance their ecological knowledge. AEI also offers a bachelor's degree in Environmental Studies which includes two years of traveling field work. The program is based on the assumption that the best way to learn about the environment is to experience it directly.

Introduction: Living Routes develops accredited, college-level programs based in ecovillages around the world, which help students gain the knowledge, skills and inspiration to build sustainable lifestyles for themselves, their communities and the Planet. We are living in the most challenging, yet also the most promising era of human history. Given trends in climate disruption, overpopulation, habitat loss, and social injustice, our dominant global culture seems very much like the Titanic -- a gigantic, human-made enterprise headed for certain disaster unless its course is significantly altered. We now need to create new models of education that support this emerging culture. This is the vision behind Living Routes - to develop ecovillage-based educational programs that empower participants to help build a sustainable future.
