Michigan's wealth of natural resources and beauty has long attracted outdoor enthusiasts. Despite intensive logging in its early history, the state is still 50% covered with forestland. The state has coasts on four of the five Great Lakes, for a total of 3,288 miles of coastline. It is also dotted with lakes and rivers - Michigan is made up of almost as much water area as it is land area.
Michigan has about 100 post-secondary institutions, many of which offer environmental degrees. The state contains the nation's first land-grant college, now Michigan State University, so it has a long history of environmental and agricultural education. Michigan also recognizes the importance of recycling - in 1976, throw-away bottles were banned by referendum, so all beverage bottles are returnable for a $0.10 buyback (not bad!).

Introduction: The distance-learning program in Coastal Zone Management at Nova Southeastern University’s Oceanographic Center provides a timely, credible forum for learning about key national and international issues and case studies related to the ecology and management of the coastal and marine environment, including ongoing research at the Oceanographic Center. The flexible distance format makes it ideal for adult learners, including working professionals and college graduates in a variety of related fields. Courses may be taken individually for general interest, undergraduate or graduate credit. We offer a full online MS in Coastal Zone Management and a 4-course Graduate Certificate in Coastal Studies. Our distance MS in Education with Specialization in Environmental Education is available through the National Graduate Teacher Education online program. The “Study Abroad” program provides a jointly-taught MS in Marine Biology with a field station of the University of London.
