Michigan's wealth of natural resources and beauty has long attracted outdoor enthusiasts. Despite intensive logging in its early history, the state is still 50% covered with forestland. These forests provide jobs, recreation, and tourism dollars - 200,000 jobs and $12 billion to the economy! The state has coasts on four of the five Great Lakes, for a total of 3,288 miles of coastline. It is also dotted with lakes and rivers - Michigan is made up of almost as much water area as it is land area.

Michigan has about 100 post-secondary institutions, many of which offer environmental degrees. The state contains the nation's first land-grant college, now Michigan State University, so it has a long history of environmental and agricultural education. Michigan also recognizes the importance of recycling - in 1976, throw-away bottles were banned by referendum, so all beverage bottles are returnable for a $0.10 buyback (not bad!).
