From the mountains to the plains to the plateaus, with all the rivers and lakes in between, New Mexico boasts much more than dry desert. The outlook is excellent for environmentalists through 2012. For instance, environmental engineering technicians can expect a growth of 31%, while environmental engineers are forecasted to increase by 26.3%.

New Mexico is home to some of the largest and deepest caves in the world, and Carlsbad Caverns in the southeastern portion of the state is a popular site for casual observers and serious spelunkers alike. Introduction: We will explore the evolution of land and culture in the beautiful Desert Southwest of the United States. Students learn about the geopolitical border of Mexico and the United States, learning about immigration issues and environmental destruction from different perspectives. The Southwest is a blending of cultures, including Natives (the Papago, Navajo and Hopi) and recent immigrants from Western European expansion (the Spanish, ranchers and cowboys, the Mormons, and others). We will spend a significant portion of our time in various desert environments of this magnificent and largely unsettled world. The desert is a unique study in life adapted to harsh living conditions, and the fantastic geological formations there will capture the imagination of nature lovers. Students will investigate ranching and water issues; where has all the water in the desert gone? Can we get it back? Southwest Desert semesters give students a deep insight into the character of the desert and the people and other creatures that inhabit it.
