With its wealth of natural resources, it's no surprise the outlook is so optimistic for environmentalists in New York. Environmental science and protection technicians can look forward to a 26.8% increase in positions through 2012, while environmental specialists and scientists are projected to see a 16.4% increase - significant gains.
New York boasts miles of ocean, forests, rivers, lakes, and parks, and Adirondack Park is said to be larger than the combined sizes of Yellowstone, Grand Canyon, Glacier, Yosemite, and Olympic parks!

Introduction: No matter how sophisticated our technology becomes, society will always require fertile soil, clean air, pure water, a stable climate, and an ozone umbrella to shield us from harmful radiation. We are only now beginning to understand the fragile ecological checks and balances that have sustained life on this planet since its origin. But much remains to be learned; for example, we can predict with certainty the orbital characteristics of a weather satellite, yet ironically, we are often unable to predict with certainty tomorrow's weather. The Environmental Studies Program at Adelphi is committed to involving its students fully in the multidisciplinary nature of environmental problems and the search for solutions. The program provides firm, integrated foundations in both the social-political-cultural and the scientific-technical areas. This preparation will make students environmentally aware members of society in many professions, in graduate study of Environmental Studies and Sciences, or both.

Introduction: The Bard Center for Environmental Policy (BCEP) promotes education, research and public service in the world of environmental policy. At the heart of the Center's activities, the Master's degree program combines an intensive academic curriculum with practical training to prepare students for environmental careers in non-profit organizations, government and the private sector. BCEP's rigorous course of studies integrates the science, law, economics, politics, and ethics that influence environmental policymaking. Graduates are equipped to apply this knowledge, underpinned by a sense of social responsibility and commitment, to address environmental problems at the local, national and international levels. Valuable career experience is gained through a full-time, one-semester professional internship, which together with close faculty mentoring facilitates entry into the job market. Degree options include a Master of Science in Environmental Policy, M.S. and J.D with Pace Law School, M.S. and M.A. in Teaching, and Master's International with the Peace Corps. The Center also sponsors public programs, such as the Open Forum, which provide students and the community at large with opportunities to discuss critical environmental issues with leading world experts.

Introduction: FutureGenerations offers a two-year Master of Arts Degree in Applied Community Change and Conservation, and our goal is to create leaders in the field of equitable and sustainable community-based change. In the 1990s, FutureGenerations led two international task forces (one with UNICEF and the other with The Rockefeller Foundation) to research education and community-development policies. Today, we continue to conduct field research around the world to evaluate and modify our approach. The intensive program turns academic theory into practice through experiential learning and on-the-job application. For site-based instruction, students go to India, the U.S., Peru, and Tibet/China to see community change in different types of communities. The distance-learning segment is the “academic” leg of community-based learning. Students interact with faculty and with one another in an engaging and challenging curriculum. Lastly, students engage in four on-the-job practicum sessions, applying and evaluating community-based-change programs with the guidance and support of faculty.

Introduction: The distance-learning program in Coastal Zone Management at Nova Southeastern University’s Oceanographic Center provides a timely, credible forum for learning about key national and international issues and case studies related to the ecology and management of the coastal and marine environment, including ongoing research at the Oceanographic Center. The flexible distance format makes it ideal for adult learners, including working professionals and college graduates in a variety of related fields. Courses may be taken individually for general interest, undergraduate or graduate credit. We offer a full online MS in Coastal Zone Management and a 4-course Graduate Certificate in Coastal Studies. Our distance MS in Education with Specialization in Environmental Education is available through the National Graduate Teacher Education online program. The “Study Abroad” program provides a jointly-taught MS in Marine Biology with a field station of the University of London.

Introduction: An interdisciplinary master's program in environmental studies that involves students in a consideration of social, philosophical, political, and educational perspectives on the environment. The 37-credit degree requires the completion of core courses, electives, an internship, and a science requirement. The electives allow students to avail themselves of the extensive resources of the University and to tailor their program to fit their particular interests in the environment, e.g., environmental education, environmental philosophy, environmental politics, environmental art, environmental policy studies, or environmental science. Graduates hold positions in government agencies, nonprofits, law firms, cultural institutions, environmental organizations, as well as private and public schools. There are many career opportunities to explore through internships and the NYU Wallerstein Collaborative with which the program is associated (www.nyu.edu/wallerstein).
