Utah is virtual paradise of natural resources. With five national parks, seven national monuments, one national historic site, six national forests, and two national recreation areas, it's clear that Utah is committed to preservation.

Opportunities for environmentalists are plentiful, as well. In fact, through 2012, environmental protection technicians are slated to see an increase of 47.8% in job opportunities, while environmental specialists and scientists are forecasted for 28.1% growth.

Introduction: We will explore the evolution of land and culture in the beautiful Desert Southwest of the United States. Students learn about the geopolitical border of Mexico and the United States, learning about immigration issues and environmental destruction from different perspectives. The Southwest is a blending of cultures, including Natives (the Papago, Navajo and Hopi) and recent immigrants from Western European expansion (the Spanish, ranchers and cowboys, the Mormons, and others). We will spend a significant portion of our time in various desert environments of this magnificent and largely unsettled world. The desert is a unique study in life adapted to harsh living conditions, and the fantastic geological formations there will capture the imagination of nature lovers. Students will investigate ranching and water issues; where has all the water in the desert gone? Can we get it back? Southwest Desert semesters give students a deep insight into the character of the desert and the people and other creatures that inhabit it.
